I am more of an engineer rather than a designer.

A designer creates a plan to define the form, looks and function based on a set of objectives, guidelines or concept. The designer creates the “design intent”, either self-motivated or based on a given set of expectations from the customer (or “surprise me”).

An engineer is one who is normally given the “design intent”, and goes about the nitty-gritty detail to design, build and make the plan, sketch or idea come to life.

The more experience designers would have a better understanding of engineering, i.e.. what can be done, or what are the real-life options that are possible. This differentiates between the young and the experienced designer (apart from the look of age).

In general, the designers will always look out for fresh and creative design ideas, whereas engineers will tend to pay more attention to the latest technology and capabilities in their respective field that could help build their next project.

I believe that there is an overlap because both are designers, where one is more focused towards the concept and vision, while the other is focused on the realizing the conceptual design and making it real, such as solving the technical design issues during the building of the prototype.
