This concept design called “Furniture for Reading” was created by Joana Santos in collaboration with Inês Carvalho and Patrícia Fernandes.
The purpose of the design is to allow the readers to sit closer to each other and enjoy the pleasure, comfort and companionship of reading together.
The construction is completely modular, using half-slotted panels to form the base lattice structure. The lattice is then held together and reinforced by 4 horizontal based panels. As this is a concept design, the actual implementation may require some base block or bracket to hold and lock the 4 horizontal pieces together at the mitered corners.
The seat is constructed in several pieces, each with varying gradients, molded to follow the contour of the lattice below. This is the part of the design that might be a little challenging, but nonetheless possible with several molding for the bent plywood. The cushion “could” be EPDM rubber foam, simply glued on to the top of the plywood.

I agree with manufacturing would be a little challenging but like the idea, very creative!
